Back in the 2012 Australian Open, Mirza and her partner, Elena Vesnina, had lost to Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva in the women's doubles semi-final. But this time she avenged her defeat, with her new partner Martina Hingis, with a comfortable win over the Russian-Italian pair. With this win, they have also extended their winning streak to 33 matches.
The World No.1 duo will now face the 12th seeded American-German pair of Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Coco Vandeweghe. Mirza and Anna go way back when she was ousted by Sania in the first round of the 2009 Wimbledon singles.
Meanwhile, Rohan Bopanna also redeemed himself after his exit in the men's doubles, by booking a place in the quarter-final of the mixed doubles. Bopanna and Chan – the elder of the Chan sisters – came back to win the game 4-6, 6-3, [10-6] after losing the first set, against Andrea Hlavackova, Bopanna's mixed doubles partner in 2014, and Lukasz Kubot.
The third seeded pair will now face Anreja Klepac and Treat Huey, the man who knocked out Bopanna in the men's doubles, in the next round - a chance for Bopanna to payback in kind.
