Why Was Mitchell Starc’s Catch Given Not Out but Jason Holder’s Catch Declared Out?

The IPL 2026 saw another umpiring controversy in the clash between GT and RCB. Jason Holder dragged the ball on the ground, after which Rajat Patidar was given out. But when Mitchell Starc took a similar catch in The Ashes, it was not given out.

‌Another controversy has erupted in the IPL 2026 but this time it is the umpires who are the main reason. It started in the clash between GT and RCB, where Rajat Patidar mistimed a shot against Arshad Khan. While taking the catch, Jason Holder had slipped on the boundary line with the ball still in his hand.
The ball even rubbed on the ground and he stood up while keeping the ball on the ground. The umpires declared it as out but Virat Kohli and Andy Flower were not at all happy with this decision. This is not for the first time a catch like this has been claimed. It happened earlier also but the result was different.
During The Ashes, Ben Duckett played a shot which was caught by Starc. However, Starc had dragged the ball in a similar fashion to Jason Holder. He even appealed that the catch had been taken but upon the reviews, it was confirmed by the umpires that under rule 33.3, it will not be out.

Our Take

The catch by Jason Holder still remains in the headlines. Several cricket analysts and umpires such as Aakash Chopra, Irfan Pathan, and many more have claimed that it was a clear not out. But the on field and third umpires claimed that they don't have enough evidence to turn the decision which has been already made. As a result, Rajat Patidar was given out which caused a moment of frustration in the RCB dugout.
