If Jasprit Bumrah retired right now, he would still go down as the greatest ever to have laced boots for India in the shortest format and the guy that won them a T20 World Cup in 2024 However, the veteran is firm that one is not enough, as he displayed with another brilliant performance on Sunday.
India's plans went awry early in the 2026 T20 World Cup virtual quarterfinal against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday as their decision to bowl first was not enough to prize any powerplay wickets. Even though Shai Hope found going difficult, he steadied anchor at one end while Roston Chase went after the bowling. In fact, the end of the 68-run opening stand only led to more carnage as Shimron Hetmyer walked out in a destructive mood and raced to 27 in just 12 deliveries. Suryakumar Yadav decided he had had enough and handed the ball to Jasprit Bumrah for a second spell in the 12th over, the job brief as simple as possible: get wickets and win India the game.
Bumrah began with a back of a length delivery to Chase that was tucked away for a single, before Hetmyer deftly played a wily slower one to run a quick two. The veteran's genius plan had taken root, and he delivered the telling punch with a quick length ball that pitched around leg stump and angled away from Hetmyer with venon, taking the batter by surprise. A desperate attempt at a pull follwoed but Hetmyer could only under edge the ball and Sanju Samson safely pocketed it to send him packing. Two deliveries later, it was the slower one that brought about Chase's demise as he completely failed to read the pace of the length delivery and ended up timidly chipping a catch to cover.
The over changed the complexion of the game entirely, and while Twitterati sung praises they were barely surprised.
