An elite athlete at the top of their game simply sees more than their peers, the quiet eye guiding their flow state. Such was the case for Daryl Mitchell in the third ODI against India in Indore as he made an astute observation that ensured Glenn Phillips would survive when given caught behind.

New Zealand rode on the back of centuries from Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips after the loss of three early wickets to post a daunting total on the board in the decider against India. Howeve, the latter failed to capitalize on his hard work after reaching the three figure mark, eventually falling for 106 despite Mitchell saving him once just three deliveries earlier.

Midway through the 43rd over, Phillips tried to drive a near-yorker length delivery from Mohammed Siraj but the Kookaburra went past his bat into the hands of KL Rahul. THere was a quiet appeal from the Men in Blue given a slight noise as the ball passed the bat, and the umpire agreed with the assesment as he raised his finger. However, Mitchell at the non-striker's end immediately signalled for a review even before Phillips himself had a chance to absorb the events. The veteran signalled to his partner that Siraj had dropped his towel from his waist in his delivery stride, which would force the ball to be called dead regardless of whether he had nicked the ball.

As it turned out, there was a big gap between bat and ball either way, but Twitterati was quick to praise Mitchell's game awareness.
