Ashes | Twitter laughs as English incompetence outtrumps Green-Carey comedy of errors in series' final mistake

Australia chased down 160 in just 31.2 overs at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Day 5 to take the Ashes home 4-1 and deliver Usman Khawaja a fitting send-off from the Test arena. However, it was far from routine for the hosts as they spurned a 62-run rapid opening stand to lose five wickets in relatively quick session, leaving them 39 still to get with two fresh batters Alex Carey and Cameron Green at the crease. The duo pressed the case forward by rattling off 20 more but just when the Kangaroos were beginning to feel secure, the English were offered a golden chance to introduce jeopardy only to let it slip in a bizarre turn of events.

On the first ball of the 29th over, Green knocked a ball down on the offside and charged towards the other end for a quick single, getting there just in time even as Brydon Carse's throw missed the stumps and went hurtling towards the outfield. Carey was alert to the situation and turned around seeking a double, but Green's rush had taken him well past the crease in his follow through. Nevertheless, Carey waved at Green to call him through as he slowed down to a jog while both men looked at the ball to take note of the situation. However, while Green decided it was time to sprint back and oblige his partner, Carey suddenly felt otherwise as the two nearly met three-quarters down the track before finding themselves running in the same direction towards the striker's end. Green eventually realized the folly and made yet another u-turn, stumbling in the process with his wicket under threat, but it was England who once again made the final mistake by throwing the ball at the wrong end to let the duo get away scot-free.

There were no more chances to speak of for the English, and Australia ended up completing the chase with five wickets to spare.
