Cricket always finds a way to get entangled in new controversies, and the final Ashes Test at Sydney Cricket Ground was no different. Ben Stokes departed without scoring on Day 2 of the encounter courtesy of a Mitchell Starc jaffa and a lack of support from technology to overturn the decision.
England's fightback on the opening day of the New Year's Test to recover after three early wickets to 211/3 at Stumps was quickly rendered ineffective on the second morning by Australia as they scalped two early wickets to peg back the tourists. Harry Brook was the first to depart after gaining a healthy outside edge that was pocketed safely by Steve Smith in the slip cordon, three overs before skipper Ben Stokes followed suit in controversial circumstances.
Stokes had faced seven balls without scoring when he found himself facing arch nemesis Mitchell Starc in the 51st over of the innings. The left-arm quick hammered down on the channel persistently, drawing two leaves and a solid defence from the England captain, before dealing the fatal blow with one that took off the surface along with some vicious seam movement away from the batter. Stokes could not help but feel for the ball, and there was a distinct sound as the ball passed the bat leading to a loud appeal from Alex Carey behind the stumps. Starc, on the other hand, was barely interested even as he raised a questioning hand in appeal but it did not keep Steve Smith from opting for a review after just a brief discussion. Snicko showed a significant spike, albeit a few frames after the ball had passed the bat, but the officials deemed it as enough evidence to overturn the on-field decision and subject Stokes to a 11-ball duck.
Stokes did not protest the decision and silently walked off, unlike Twitterati.
Snicko things!
Mitchell Starc once again had Ben Stokes' number. Did you agree with the review? | |

Hopless
Stokes - was that really out ? This Snicko technology is absolutely hopeless.
Snicko Awful
It’s out for me but my word snicko is awful

Cheating snicko
How can the umpires conclusively say that is out?
— Joe (@Joessportcards)
Especially when there was an exact frame when the ball crossed the bat and then one after?
Snicko screwing england and the aussies always cheating
Dissapointed!
Yet again Snicko is the worst system ever invented
