Fielding tends to be the difference at the biggest stage and Zimbabwe painfully realised that in the T20 World Cup. They gave a reprieve to Shimron Hetmyer, only to see the West Indies batter smash a 19-ball half-century, with the crowd adding salt to the wounds with a catching masterclass.

‌West Indies started their Super Eight campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026 with a crushing 107-run win over Zimbabwe at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday. Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell smashed whirlwind half-centuries to power the Windies to 254/6, the second highest total ever in marquee events in the shortest format, after being put in. Hetmyer tonked seven sixes and boundaries to bulldoze to a 34-ball 85, after being the fastest West Indies player to reach his fifty, off 19 balls, in the T20 showpiece, while former skipper Powell hit 59 off 35 balls, including four boundaries and sixes each.

In return ,the African unit could manage only 147 before being bowled out with 14 balls to spare, with the left-arm spin duo of Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie picking up seven wickets between them. But the outcome could have gone in a different direction altogether had Tashinga Musekiwa pouched a regulation catch from the southpaw when he was on nine. Attempting a pull off pacer Blessing Muzarabani, the Rajasthan Royals batter found Musekiwa at the square leg fence only for the fielder to put down a straightforward chance.

The same fielder again dropped Hetmyer on 72 in the 12th over but the damage was done by then as the side had already powered to 122/2. But what was more embarrassing for the Sikandar Raza-led side was that an enthusiastic crowd at Wankhede gave them free catching tutorials when the Hetmyer-Powell duo cleared boundaries at will during their 122-run stand for the third wicket.

With the left-handed batter clearing wide long on, an official displayed a safe pair of hands to catch it in front of the barricade. Meanwhile, Powell’s strong whip over the mid wicket fence saw a viewer pouch another amid a number of hands chasing leather. That ended up adding salt to Zimbabwe’s wounds on an out of sorts night for them in the Super Eights opener.

Clinical catches!
