Fielding first after winning the toss, the Indian spinners capitalised on the early start offered by the pacers. With England pushed on the back foot despite Jos Buttler’s fiery 45, India looked formidable halfway through the contest. This is when Carse tried to counter them by clobbering a couple of maximums against in-form Varun before falling to Suryakumar’s ploy.
Earning a couple of sixes over long on and deep backward square leg, Carse looked to play with strike rotation in the 16th over. On the last ball, Varun bowled a fuller one outside the stumps that Carse missed to connect trying to whip it towards the leg side. The ball turned into the right-hander, beating the inside edge to hit the thigh pad and deflect onto the off stump, leaving it uprooted. Right after, the Indian captain pointed his finger at Varun, probably gesturing about a possible plan that worked out for the bowler, leading to Twitterverse discussion.
