‌WPL | Twitter in awe as Ecclestone’s peripheral genius enforces Garth’s runout in smart play

Match awareness is an underrated trait that an individual should inherit in sports. English all-rounder Sophie Ecclestone did the same during the first innings of the WPL encounter between the UP Warriorz and Royal Challengers Bengaluru after inflicting a runout from peripheral vision.

Winning the toss and electing to field first didn't turn out rosy for Deepti Sharma and the UP Warriorz as Daniel Wyatt-Hodge and Ellyse Perry peppered the opposition bowlers in a 94-run second-wicket stand setting up a 180-run first innings total. However, the spotlight shifted from the RCB batters to Ecclestone on the final ball of the innings when the English women inflicted an impeccable runout, defining smartness.

Having conceded five runs in as many deliveries of the final over, Ecclestone bowled a low full toss at Perry who drove it towards long off and scampered for a couple of runs. As her partner, Kim Garth sprinted towards the non-striker’s end, the throw from the deep came towards Ecclestone who was a couple of yards from the stumps, and executed an underarm throw from peripheral vision. To everyone’s surprise, the ball deflected the woods and the bails lit up even before Garth could make ground. Not only Ecclestone’s teammates but even the commentators and the Twitterverse were awed by her smart tactics with precision.
