IND vs BAN | Mominul Haque’s steady play and Akash Deep’s brilliance overshadowed by rain on day one

Rain heavily influenced the first day of the second Test match between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur, causing delays at the start. Akash Deep took two vital wickets to restrict the visitors, while Mominul Haque helped boost the score to 107 for 3 before play was suspended due to the rain.

‌A dreary, overcast morning in Kanpur caused a delay in the start of the second Test match between India and Bangladesh. After being invited to bat first, Bangladesh's openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam approached their innings cautiously as Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj effectively utilised the new ball. After eight overs, Bangladesh's score stood at 26/0, prompting Rohit Sharma to introduce his third seamer, Akash Deep. This decision paid off immediately, as he dismissed Zakir in his first over. The troubles for the top order continued when he struck again, claiming Islam's wicket and providing India with a significant breakthrough. As the pitch began to settle, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque settled in, handling India’s pace and spin attack relatively easily. The pair forged a brisk 45-run partnership, bringing Bangladesh's score to 74/2 2 in 26 overs when lunch was called, accompanied by a drizzle.

After the lunch break, the sun shone brightly as Ravichandran Ashwin took to the ball to start the proceedings. His skill was quickly evident when he dismissed the Bangladesh skipper in the 29th over, bringing Mushfiqur Rahim to the crease. Mominul looked solid at the crease, hitting occasional boundaries and helping the score reach 107/3 in 35 overs. However, dark clouds rolled in again, prompting the two on-field umpires to consult the light meter. The Indian players gathered, anxiously awaiting the umpires' decision. With the ominous clouds overhead, play was halted due to poor light forcing both teams to retreat to the dressing rooms. Shortly thereafter, a heavy downpour began, once again enveloping the entire ground as the wait continued. With the rain persisting and the forecast showing little improvement, match officials had no choice but to call it a day, holding out hope for better conditions tomorrow morning.
