‌IND vs BAN | Twitter and Gambhir laud Akash Deep breaking Bangladesh’s backbone with back-to-back corkers

Time and again, an intriguing element of mystery has defined a few novices breaking into the cricketing world. Although it is relevant more with the spinners, Akash Deep turned out a similar surprise package for the Bangladesh batters in the morning session of the second day in Chennai.

Despite losing one-half of the overnight pair early in the morning, India managed to pile up 376 runs in the first innings on the back of Ravichandran Ashwin’s sixth ton and Akash’s mini-blitz with the bat. In response, Bangladesh suffered a setback in the first over itself, courtesy of a Jasprit Bumrah seed. Aiming to revive themselves from the early setback, Zakir Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto withstood the hosts for seven overs before Akash renounced himself to drag the ball into India’s court at the stroke of Lunch.

Having conceded just a single run in his first over, Akash came around the wicket and perfected an in-zipper off the good length to Zakir on the ninth over’s first ball. Zakir intended to stonewall it from outside the line but ended up getting beaten on the inside edge and watched the middle stump get uprooted.

On the next ball, new batter Mominul Haque was left stunned after a carbon copy delivery culminated into back-to-back scalps for the Bengal pacer. The only difference in the second scalp was that the ball ricocheted off the pads onto the off stump after beating Mominul’s inside edge. Seeing Akash transcend his domestic excellence into the international set-up, headcoach Gautam Gambhir along with bowling coach Morne Morkel had a grin across their face, sending the Twitterverse flooded in praise of the workhorse pacer.
