Duleep Trophy | Twitter reacts to Shreyas laughing in disbelief after drawing first blood on day's final ball

‌One great performance is all it takes to turn critics into your strongest supporters. India D’s captain Shreyas Iyer rode a similar vibe as the trolls for a seven-ball duck were rubbished following his scalp at the stroke of Stumps on the second day of the Duleep Trophy clash against India A.

India A’s aim of a 300-run first innings total was left unfulfillec courtesy of Harshit Rana’s opening spell before Khaleel Ahmed helped India revert the tides with brilliance of their own in the form of a couple new-ball strikes. With the other pacers joining in too, the Shreyas Iyer-led side was folded for 183 runs at Tea. However, a pitch that had suited the bowlers for the majority of the daym surprisingly began assisting the batters in the third session. Mayank Agarwal and Pratham Singh’s 105-run opening stand made the India D bowlers toil hard for a breakthrough until the skipper showed the path at the close of the day.

The use of five full-time bowlers failed to draw first blood for the initial 28 overs in the third innings of the game with Agarwal and Pratham going strong. Seeing this, Shreyas took upon the onus himself by bowling the last over of the day for a change and it turned out to be effective as Mayank’s hard hand push on a fuller delivery lead to his downfall on the Mumbaikar's first ball. As the red cherry ricocheted off the blade’s bottom half to the bowler, Shreyas dived to his right and grasped it with firm hands.

Subsequently, the 29-year-old was ecstatic and sprinted around with his teammates. Simultaneously, the Karnataka batter was left devastated on throwing away his wicket on a nothing ball at the stroke of Stumps. After a TV check confirmed that Shreyas had taken the catch cleanly, the same Twitterverse that trolled him for his earlier duck quickly transformed into a wave of support.

For all the hubbub around white-ball cricket, the stakes of a red-ball game remain unmatched for the result doesn't define the toil of one day or 40 overs but four days of sweat. Frustration only becomes natural thus when teammates fail to cooperate, as was evident in the Bengal-Punjab Ranji clash.
