Fielding in cricket is as important as the other two dimensions of the sport—batting and bowling. While the Indian Women's cricketers were criticized for poor fielding during the Australia series, Minnu Mani’s excellent grab in the first T20I against the West Indies silenced all the doubters.
The West Indies Women’s decision to bowl first didn’t go as planned as the best friends Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues barred them from getting enough early wickets. Fifties from the two Maharashtra-based batters propelled India to a 196-run first innings total. In response, West Indies required a solid foundation at the start but thanks to Mani’s incredible fielding effort that sent the danger-woman back to the dugout inside the powerplay
Titas Sadhu donned the ball from the opposite end with Renuka Thakur in the second innings and marked a statement on the second ball itself. She bowled on a length outside the stumps, angling it into the right-hander from over the wicket. Mathews failed to smack underneath the bounce while intending to pull and got a top-edge flying past mid on. The ball hovered over the inner circle and substitute fielder Mani sprinted swiftly towards it. She quickly covered good ground and dived forward after running back to grasp the cricket ball with firm hands. The outstanding fielding granted Titas the early breakthrough and Mathews was gone for just a single.
