Sourav Ganguly to be re-elected CAB President unopposed

Sourav Ganguly will begin his second term as President of the Cricket Association of Bengal on the 28th of September for which the 85th Annual General Meeting is scheduled, in accordance with the deadline set by the Committee of Administrators. The last date for receiving applications to run for the post of President or for a spot in his five-member panel was on Saturday, but no one went ahead to file their nominations for the same.

However, having taken over the reigns from Jagmohan Dalmiya who passed away in 2015, Ganguly’s tenure will only extend upto July of next year following which he will have to give up the post. According to the new cool-off rules mentioned in BCCI’s constitution as per the Lodha Panel’s recommendations, an office-bearer can only serve six successive years before he will have to take some time off. Previously, it was thought that the legendary cricketer would be ineligible for a renewed term having served as a Joint Secretary previously, until the Supreme Court recently qualified that the period of councillors won’t be taken into account.

It may also happen that Ganguly decides to renew his contract with the Delhi Capitals in April as their mentor for the IPL’s next edition and his premature leave will push Abhishek Dalmiya to the post of President. He is is set to be named Secretary in the AGM and has shown great promise following in his father’s footsteps. This would lead Debabrata Das as the solitary Joint Secretary. Naresh Ojha will be serving as Vice President while Debashish Ganguly will be looking after the funds once he is named the Treasurer.
