Australia have made DRS the most difficult proposition to decode and their failure to spot it once again, cost them a big wicket today. The team didn’t go for the review after Mitchell Marsh hit Joe Denly in front and eventually, ended up regretting as the replay showed three reds later.
While this incredible Test series will be remembered for some wonderful cricket, both the teams' mistakes in judging the DRS calls would also take a page as well. After Tim Paine’s judgemental error cost Australia the Headingley Test, the story repeated once again at The Oval today.
On the last ball of the 45th over, Mitchell Marsh bowled an inswinger to the English opener but he was all squared up against the delivery. As the ball hit Denly on his pads, Marsh and the entire Australian team went up for a huge appeal. However, the umpire simply turned down the appeal, thinking it would go on to miss the stumps.
All said and done, everyone went back to their respective positions when Tim Paine, after a mini discussion decided not to review the call, but the reality dawned - thanks to the TV umpire - soon after. The ball was not going down legs as the HawkEye showed that it was hitting the leg stump pretty easily and had the visitors gone for it, Mitchell Marsh would have added one more wicket to his tally. Cruel fate, you could say, but bad judgement is the apt keyword here.
