The expert panel at Star Sports have questioned why extra covers were not used to cover the entire ground at Trent Bridge even as it drizzled continuously on Thursday. Now, India and New Zealand are likely to share points in Nottingham as persistent showers have done damage to the ground.
The ongoing World Cup is the most affected by rain and as many as three matches have been cancelled due to heavy rains. If the India-New Zealand game gets cancelled, then it will be the fourth game being declared as no result. While regular rains have been the major contributor for the same, Brian Lara, Anil Kumble question Nottingham’s rain preparedness asking tough questions to the ground staff.
"It's the water that's runoff from the covers. My question is there's been plenty of rain, there was a prediction for a lot of rain this week. Could they have reinforced more covers in Nottingham and covered most of the area of the ground?, asked Kumble on Star Sports.
"The advantage in one sense in England is that you have a large cover. But the disadvantage is when it rains like this. The areas around the bowling run-up are wet," the former India skipper added.
Brian Lara agreed with Kumble’s view on the ground preparedness and stated that ECB needed to keep rain in mind and prepare for the same.
"It's a huge tournament. A lot of money is invested. We knew from a long time ago that this [rain threat] was a great possibility. They should have ideally thought 'hey, let's have some extra covers, extra labour so that we have a bit of cricket," Lara said.
