The Cricket Club of India has declared that the gate on Vachha Road at Churchgate will be named after former Indian cricketer Vijay Merchant. It has also been decided that the function to name the gate after the former president of the club will be held on August 8 amidst the presence of members.

With a first-class average of 71, Vijay Merchant is next in line to Sir Don Bradman and even though he averaged only 47 in Test cricket, at one point, he emerged as India’s greatest batsman. In a career that spanned over 18 years, Merchant was the epitome of class in the first-class cricket, making himself the pioneer during the pre-independent era. In order to celebrate his legacy and his indelible contribution to Bombay cricket, the CCI will name one of its gates after Merchant.

The gate on Dinshaw Vaccha Road at Churchgate will be named after Merchant, who had also acted as a former president of the club, reported Indian Express. The function to name the gate after the legendary cricketer will be held on August 8. The CCI official has also added that several prominent cricketers, including former England skipper Mike Gatting and ex-India captain Nari Contractor, are expected to attend the event.

Earlier in the past, the CCI had named one of its gates after Rajsingh Dungarpur, former chairman of selectors, who is credited with picking legendary Sachin Tendulkar for the first time in the national side. The gate was inaugurated by Tendulkar himself in 2017.
