Bairstow sustained a minor finger injury during the third day’s play of the Trent Bridge Test. He suffered a fracture on the middle finger of his left hand when James Anderson’s ball went on to hit him in the 44th over after Cheteshwar Pujara left it alone. He immediately gave away his keeping gloves and rushed for an X-ray, which confirmed the fracture.
However, the gloveman played in the fourth Test as a specialist batsman and scored six and zero by coming out to bat at number four and five respectively in both innings. Jos Butler took up keeping for the Englishmen in the game and wasn't that busy behind the stumps with only one catch in the entire game.
Also, ahead of the series-ending Test, Joe Root has confirmed that England will field an unchanged XI for The Oval Test with Moeen Ali batting at No. 3.
England playing XI:
Alastair Cook, Keaton Jennings, Moeen Ali, Joe Root (C), Jonny Bairstow (WK), Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Stuart Broad, James Anderson
