Most corrupt bookies in international cricket are Indians, claims Alex Marshall

ICC’s ACU GM Alex Marshall, who is currently investigating 12-22 individuals for suspicious activities, has claimed that most of the corrupt bookies in world cricket are of Indian origin. The claim comes after an Al Jazeera investigation claimed that match fixing was still prevalent in cricket.

The ICC’s Anti Corruption Unit GM Alex Marshall while investigation into the corruption in Sri Lanka Cricket, said that it has been a case of both - the local and the Indian corruptors. 

The legendary Sanath Jayasuriya is also booked with charged for non-cooperation with the investigation in the Sri-Lankan Cricket. 

“In Sri Lanka it was both local and Indian corruptors. In most other parts of the world it is mostly corrupt Indian bookies," Marshall told Cricinfo.

While talking, Marshall’s assertion is not a surprise given that the involvement of Indian Bookies in the game in 2000’s which shook the core of the game. He also talked about about active corruptors with England and Sri Lankan cricketers, currently involved in a limited-overs series.

“During the briefing (to England and Sri Lanka players), we showed names and pictures of active corruptors in cricket who were trying to get at players both in Sri Lanka and at tournaments elsewhere in the world. So we have openly shared the current information of active corruptors, we have shown their pictures, given their names and details. This way we felt the players are better informed. The exercise has already lead to new information coming forward from the teams.”

Marshall stated that they are currently monitoring 12-20 active corruptors and there are around 6 more which the players should stay away from . 

“We showed them six. The pictures shown were all men, but there are a couple of women, too, involved in the whole picture,” added Marshall.
