BCCI slammed by fans over Anil Kumble birthday post

The BCCI tweeted an indifferent birthday wish for Anil Kumble and it ignited the fans since the tweet simply described record Test wicket-taker just as a "former bowler". As a result, the board had to hastily delete the tweet and put up a new one which now has Legend and Jumbo as hashtags.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India posted a birthday wish on Twitter to wish Kumble for his 47th birthday but a good move backfired owing to the low-key description of Kumble in the tweet which angered the fans. The legendary cricketer's fans got took offence when BCCI described the spinning great simply as a former bowler. As the situation got heated up, the board's social media team deleted it in a hurry and tweeted again a modified version of the previous tweet.

"Here's wishing former #TeamIndia bowler @anilkumble1074 a very happy birthday," read the BCCI message on its official Twitter account, before the post was deleted.

The string follows the bitter departure of Kumble in June as national coach when he quit the job stating his "untenable" relationship with captain Virat Kohli.

Angry fans of Kumble replied to the tweet and stated that the board was undermining the achievements of India's greatest bowler.

"Umm bowler? Wasn't he also Captain and Coach and is India's leading Wicket taker?" replied reputed television journalist and author Digvijay Singh Deo on Twitter.

Other fans asked the board to give Kumble his "due respect".

Later, BCCI tweeted another wish and called him "former captain" and "legend", but the damage could not be undone.

After Kumble's resignation, his relationship with the BCCI was the subject of much speculation. Reports of board officials trying to salvage ties between Kumble and Kohli did rounds in the Indian press, but that the relationship was beyond repair was evident after Kumble posted the resignation clarification on his social media accounts.

Kumble never commented on the matter publicly and Ravi Shastri was since been appointed as the chief coach of Indian team.

Kumble, or 'Jumbo' as he is fondly known, remains India's highest Test wicket-taker with his 619 scalps in 132 matches and has played for India for 17 years.
