Virat Kohli alongside Anil Kumble wasn’t ideal, says Adam Gilchrist

Kumble's removal from the post of India's coach after a successful stint has been widely considered as unceremonious and immoral by many in the cricketing fraternity. But Gilchrist is of the opinion that Kohli didn’t seem as comfortable under Anil Kumble as he has been with Ravi Shastri. This comes days under Rahul Dravid said that the Anil Kumble fiasco shouldn’t have been played the way it did in media.

However, the decision has panned out quite well for the Indian team as they have been on a high since then and Gilchrist seemed to be supportive of it to some extent. Speaking in an interview with India Today, Gilchrist said, “I can only speak from my personal experiences in the teams I have played in. Clearly, in that example, Virat is extremely comfortable with Ravi (Shastri) and vice versa and so, they are obviously a good match.”

“Clearly that wasn’t the case with Anil (Kumble) and Virat. I have no idea and don’t have the desire to get into the details of that but that wasn’t an ideal situation,” he said.

Asked who have been the best players across three formats, Gilchrist said, “I think Virat Kohli (perfect ODI player) at the moment. He is unstoppable. AB de Villiers comes to mind (for the perfect T20 player) but I suppose you have to think more all-round so, a guy like Kieron Pollard is pretty really handy.”

The 45-year-old also rated former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as one of the perfect captains alongside Australia’s legendary Steve Waugh. “I will give two answers, one from having played underneath and I think Steve Waugh is right there and I perceive MS (Dhoni), one having not played underneath,” he said.
