R Ashwin has clarified his comments wherein he compared CSK’s return to the IPL and Manchester United’s Munich disaster, saying that he was misquoted. Ashwin faced a backlash for saying that CSK’s absence from the IPL would increase their value like it did for United after the 1958 tragedy.

Given that Ravichandran Ashwin became a household name for his performances with Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, it’s understandable that the bowler could not contain his excitement about CSK’s return to the IPL next year after his side served a two year-ban for their part in the IPL fixing fraud.

However, Ashwin courted controversy, claiming that CSK’s return to the IPL would increase their value just like it had done for Manchester United after the tragic Munich air crash in 1958. "I think the two-year hiatus for CSK probably increases its value much like what it did for Manchester United when the air crash happened (in 1958 when eight of their players died). I don't know if it's in the same league but surely people in Chennai and fans across the world are waiting for CSK to return. I hope it turns out to be a good comeback," Ashwin stated.

The 30-year-old was referring to the unfortunate air disaster that Manchester United’s team had suffered while returning from playing a European game against Red Star Belgrade which led to the death of 8 United players. However, United managed to overcome this disaster and eventually went on to win the European Cup 10 years later.

And while Ashwin may have meant the comparison as a compliment to United’s resilience, he ended up receiving a severe backlash for his comments.

On the back of such a reaction, the 30-year-old has clarified his comments saying
