Rumesh Ratnayake to head SLC's fast bowling program

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has appointed former pace bowler Rumesh Ratnayake as the head of the board’s fast bowling program. 15 years ago, Ratnayake had headed a similar program at the SLC before joining the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to help fast bowlers of Associate Members of the continent.

As SLC's head of fast bowling, Ratnayake will work with SLC’s high-performance centre and will also oversee the work of the board's other fast-bowling coaches. However, he will not work and tour with the Sri Lanka side for every series.

"Rumesh will take over at the end of this month and he will be overall in charge of the fast bowling unit where we have about six coaches," Asanka Gurusinha, Sri Lanka's Cricket Manager told Cricbuzz.

"He might go on certain tours depending on the tour and requirements. We are building a structure similar to that of Australia. The main idea, however, is for him to work with the Fast Bowling Program and identify talent. Rumesh is vastly experienced and he will be a great asset to us," Gurusinha added.

Earlier, Ratnayake worked as the supplementary fast-bowling coach with the national team during the 2015 World Cup. He had also been the interim head coach during Australia's tour to Sri Lanka in 2011.

One of the fastest Sri Lanka bowlers in the 1980s, Ratnayake made his international debut at the age of 18 but his career was cut short due to a spate of injuries which forced him to announce his retirement from the game only at the age of 29 following which he moved into coaching.
