IPL 2017 | Suresh Raina overtakes Virat Kohli to become IPL's highest run-getter

Suresh Raina overtook Virat Kohli’s record of 4110 runs during his knock of 68 not out for Gujarat Lions against Kolkata Knight Riders in the third match of IPL 2017 in Rajkot yesterday. It was his 29th half-century in the competition. He is certain to hold the record until Kohli's return.

Raina moved to 4166 with a captain’s innings to lead Gujarat to a confident 183. However, it wasn’t enough as Gautam Gambhir (76*) and Chris Lynn (93*) led Kolkata to a 10-wicket victory.

Raina will hold the record for some time as there is no clarity on the return date of Kohli. India skipper Kohli injured his shoulder during the third Test against Australia in Ranchi and sat out of the final Test. He also missed the start of the Royal Challengers season.

Speaking on the sidelines of Bangalore’s first game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kohli said he would return only when he is “120 per cent fit.”

“The priority is Indian cricket with the Champions Trophy coming up and I don’t want to take any risks,” he said, “I have not set any date and I will only return when I am 120 per cent fit. Having said that I would like to return onfield as soon as possible.”
