Karnataka batsman Pavan Deshpande, Tamil Nadu's Jagadeesan, Kerala's Vishnu Vinod and Himachal Pradesh's Prashant Chopra were given trials yesterday by RCB coach Daniel Vettori, Cricbuzz reported. First team players, including new signing Tymal Mills, used their day off to test the batsmen skills.
But it wasn't just the batting skills that were being tested. AB de Villiers pulling out of the Momentum One-Day Cup final due to a back injury has created an opening in the wicketkeeper position as well. While RCB already have Kedar Jadhav and Travis Head in the squad, the Indian is now used as an off-spinner while Head was not a regular feature on the team last season.
Jagadeesan and Vinod keep wickets regularly for their state while Prashant has the capability to fill the wicketkeeper role as well. It appears that Jagadeesan and Vinod have emerged frontrunners for the role and could fancy their chances of making it into the star-studded outfit.
Even before a ball has been bowled RCB look to be in trouble with injured Virat Kohli ruled out for the first few games and De Villiers not guaranteed to start in the opening game.
