After playing his last Test for India at the Oval in 2014 and impressing with his performances in the domestic front in the Duleep Trophy, Gautam Gambhir could be finally returning to the Indian cricket team according to reports published by India Today.
Coach Anil Kumble is sweating over the fitness of opener KL Rahul, who was not present on the field, after picking up a hamstring injury, on the final day of the first Test between Indian and New Zealand, which the host won by 197 runs. It was reported that Kumble had asked the management to call up in-form Gambhir, as a back-up opener for the second Test in Kolkata, which starts on September 30.
After being ignored for almost two long years, the Delhi batsman was in great form for India Blue in the Duleep Trophy, as he amassed a total of 356 runs in three matches and also outscored two of the current Indian openers, Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay, in the final, leading India Blue to the trophy. Finally, all those efforts seem to have come to fruition.
