Sourav Ganguly : MS Dhoni can play at number four and finish from there

Sourav Ganguly feels that MS Dhoni should continue to bat at No.4 for India in the ODIs despite India's loss in the fourth ODI. The CAB president insisted that a finisher need not bat lower down the order in order to finish games and cited the example of Virat Kohli to drive home his point.

Indian ODI skipper MS Dhoni has promoted himself up the batting order in the on-going ODI series against New Zealand. He scored a crucial knock of 80 in the 3rd ODI as India cruised to a 7-wicket win while chasing a challenging total of 285. Following that performance, the fans and experts have urged Dhoni to remain at No.4 and now Sourav Ganguly has voiced a similar opinion.

Batting at No.4 in the 4th ODI, Dhoni failed to get India over the line as they crumbled to a 19-run defeat. However, despite the loss, Ganguly maintains that Dhoni should remain at No.4 and has rubbished the notion that a 'finisher' needs to bat down the order to be able to finish matches.

"Let him play at number four. He will finish from there. Finisher does not mean he has to bat from the 40th over. Virat (Kohli) bats at three and he is finishing games. It's a wrong concept that a finisher has to come lower down the order. Dhoni got India over the ropes in the other match batting at four," Ganguly said, reported PTI.

"He (Virat Kohli) is an excellent player, but I don't think the team is becoming too dependent on him. New Zealand is a good side. They will win some matches also," he added.

Indian ODI skipper MS Dhoni has claimed that the team are not overly reliant on Virat Kohli to deliver while chasing targets after the 19-run loss to the Kiwis in the 4th ODI at Ranchi. Dhoni also believes that the lack of ODI matches has made it difficult for the team to adjust to this format.
