Alastair Cook became the youngest to reach 11,000 Test runs on Friday (Dec 16) when he took two runs off the first ball of the fifth and final Test of their India tour at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The 31-year-old took 252 innings to achieve the feat and joins an elite club of 10.
Cook's England have already lost the series 3-0 and the pundits are calling for the skipper's head. As a batsman, however, he has something to cheer him amidst the gloom.
Cook also became the fastest in terms of time taken to reach the record, although that pales in significance when we account for the increase in number of Tests played every year in recent times.
©ESPNcricinfoKumar Sangakkara leads the pack in terms of quickest to reach the mark by innings, having made it in only 208 innings, 44 less than the Englishman. He is followed by the trinity of Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, and Sachin Tendulkar.
Cook, however, did not spend much time in the middle to savor the feat as he departed for just 10, edging left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja to Virat Kohli in the slips after the visitors elected to bat.
The England captain has scored 387 runs at an average of about 38 so far in this series with a century and a fifty.
Interestingly, Cook made his Test debut in Nagpur a decade ago.
