Indian limited-overs captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni may play for India A in a couple of warm-up matches against England to get some much-needed match practice ahead of the England ODI series. Dhoni has last played a competetive match on October 29 against New Zealand at Visakhapatnam.

England will play a couple of warm-up matches against an India A side on 10th and 12th January at the CCI Stadium in Mumbai. Dhoni has not been playing competitive cricket since the home series against New Zealand in October and probably would have gone into the ODI series without proper game time for 77 days, if he had opted out of the A matches.

Dhoni has been practicing with the Jharkhand Ranji Trophy team, but is not playing in the Ranji Trophy. Jharkhand State Cricket Association Secretary Rajesh Verma, on Sunday had said that Dhoni will play only the role of a 'mentor' to the senior state team.

"Dhoni does not play Test cricket anymore so the question of playing first-class cricket does not arise at all. He is a mentor of the Jharkhand team. He will play for Jharkhand in the Vijay Hazare Trophy," Verma said to PTI on Sunday.

India will play against England in a three-match one-day and a three-match T20 series, starting from January 15 in Pune.
