The young Indian boxers at the World Youth Championships in Budapest have put up a stunning show so far. Asian silver-medallist Ankit Khatana and Asian bronze-medallist Bhavesh Kattimani (52kg) were the Indian male boxers to have advanced to the semifinals.
And now, Jony (60kg), Sakshi (57kg), Astha Pahwa (75kg) and Anamika (51kg) entered the semi-finals of their respective weight categories last night in the women’s boxing events. Jony defeated China’s Chen Yibing 5-0, after which Sakshi got the better of Russia’s Valeriia Rodionova by a similar margin. Later, Astha clinched a split verdict over Albania Elsidita Selaj, while Anamika defeated Italian Martina La Piana. Reigning champion Nitu (48kg) had already qualified for the semis previously.
Earlier, Ankit became the third Indian boxer to make the semifinals at the event after he prevailed 5-0 over Denmark's Nikolai Terteryan in the lightweight 60kg category. Bhavesh notched up a close 3-2 win over Badr Berhili of Morocco, while Nitu dominated her match with such ferocity that the referee awarded it to her in the first round itself against Germany's Maxi Klotzer yesterday.
