Indian national champion Sourabh Verma bagged an international title in Slovenia on Sunday. Verma defeated Minoru Koga of Japan in straight games by a scoreline of 21-17, 21-12 in the men’s singles final in Medvode today. Verma, who was the top-seeded Indian in the tournament, had to save two match points in the semi-finals against Denmark’s Karan Rajan Rajarajan as he held his nerve in the earlier round to make book his ticket for the final match.
However, it was a heartbreak for the Indian women’s doubles pair of Sanjana Santosh and Pooja Dhandu as they had to settle for a silver medal by losing by a margin of 21-14, 22-20 in the final match against England’s Jenny Moore and Victoria Williams.
Earlier last month, Sourabh Verma and fast-rising teen Lakshya Sen lost in the second round of the Denmark International tournament. The 26-year old Indian shuttler, previously, had also completed a hat-trick of titles at the Senior Badminton Nationals.
