New rules should be enforced soon in India, says PT Usha after CAS ruling

After CAS decided in favour of the IAAF against Caster Semenya, PT Usha has stated that the new rules of medicating to reduce the testosterone levels should be enforced in India soon. Usha has also mentioned that she has seen many such athletes in India mostly in 200m, 400m and 800m events.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) panel has decided in favour of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in the case against South African athlete Caster Semenya on a testosterone limit for the women athletes. As per the new rules, if an athlete is having a high testosterone level then she will be medicated to bring the level down to normal.

Meanwhile, ace Indian athlete PT Usha has come in favour of the CAS ruling and said that it should be enforced in India as soon as possible as well.

“There are a lot of athletes like this in India and this has come up in recent times, especially in events like the 200m, 400m and 800m,” Usha told Sportstar.

“The new rules should be enforced as soon as possible in India before others start talking about it. Now the timings may not be spectacular as they had been in the recent past. We had come to a stage when natural girls could not do anything about it. So, this is a big victory for women. I welcome this decision because women should only run against women,” Usha said.

The secretary of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) CK Valson has, however, said that the CAS verdict will not have a lot of effect on the Indian athletes.

“I don’t find any problem as of now because Dutee Chand runs only the 100m and 200m. In the case of other athletes, there is no concrete evidence as of now,” Valson said.

“We need not send an advisory to athletes regarding this. If it becomes a rule, everyone will know about it. It will look bad if we send an advisory like that.”
