Neeraj Chopra started 2018 on a positive note as he won the silver medal in the International Javelin Meet in Germany on Sunday, where he threw the javelin as far as 82.80 metres. Local favourite Johannes Vetter claimed the gold medal as the German managed a throw of 84.08 meters.
Currently coached by Garry Calvert, the silver medal will act as a serious boost of confidence for the 20-year-old ahead of the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Chopra was the first Indian ever to clinch a gold in a javelin throw event when he won it in the 2016 South Asian games and at the 2017 Asian Championships.
He has also won gold at the 2016 South Asian Games, where his throw of 82.23 m equalled the Indian national record. It was followed by another gold medal in 2017’s Asian Athletic championships, where his throw was 85.23 meters.
